Help Principessa Giulia to Educate Herself in Cryptography
This August, I just completed the inaugural seminar of a newly-minted virtual educational programme led by a distinguished philosophy professor teaching in Paris, France. The topic of the seminar was, broadly speaking, the value of a humanist education in an era of AI and machine learning. It was fantastic. The foundation which provided it is a wonderful, pioneering project charting the future trajectory of humanistic higher education via para-academic virtual institutions, a critical cultural mission in today’s era of so very many forms of seeming crisis and dramatic change. Their next upcoming seminar is on the topics of The Voynich Manuscript, the Riverbank Institute, and the Deep Philosophical Origins of the American Military-Information-Technology Complex.
I just submitted my application to the seminar today.
Something you might not know is that I am a former “prodigy,” blessed to receive an accelerated private education, who took my first philosophy course in university at a remarkably young age. My specific area of talent is in language and the fine arts, and especially in oil painting and academic philosophy. Another thing you might not be aware of is that I have always been fascinated by cryptography and codebreaking. Think of the incredible service performed to the world by Allied Codebreakers during World War II, and be humbled.
The Voynich Manuscript, which may have been composed in Italy during the Italian Renaissance, is an illustrated codex hand-written in an undeciphered script called “Voynichese.” The work has been studied by numerous researchers, including the best codebreakers in the world, since its discovery, but never decisively translated. The notion of the Voynich Manuscript as an enigmatic, experimentally-encoded, functionally impenetrable piece of writing is fascinating and evocative to me—both as a history lesson, but also as a practical exercise for learning about cryptography. Who knows what I might discover, and what I might become capable of?
While I have never worked in any government sector job, it is not only the case that the topic of the relations between the U.S. citizenry and the military is important to me and near and dear to my heart, but also that military intelligence is an increasingly important topic for citizens to educate themselves regarding in our current era. With the advent of AI and machine learning also comes the problem of discernment in media and popular discourse—problems and questions regarding deepfakes, AI relationship chatbots, data brokerage and privacy rights, algorithmic polarization and radicalization, LLM hallucinations, and false and misleading information disseminating on social media, all proliferate in abundance. Hannah Arendt famously said that the greatest acts of evil are not necessarily committed by supervillains, but by those who never make up their mind about whether to be good or evil. Her claim is that a citizenry who has become indifferent—to the truth or falsehood of asserted facts circulating in their own political discourse—constitutes the ideal subject of totalitarian rule. This is not just a provocative hot take, but an incisive mandate for any serious, politically astute U.S. citizen observing events in our country today. Studying cryptography, military intelligence and philosophy, and the Voynich manuscript is a potential orientation point for myself and others to develop good recommendations for policymakers and citizens alike for how our polity might preserve the nearly sacred importance of factual truth for democracy, resist becoming totalitarianism’s “ideal subject,” and cultivate a culture that refuses to normalize intellectual apathy.
For all these reasons, I wish to enroll in this upcoming cryptography course. I need to raise $250 for tuition by October 1st, which is a very modest goal. Additional money raised will go towards spoiling myself, taking yoga classes, dressing myself in luxurious lingerie, and acquiring fine art supplies. I will be busy working on my final writing project for the organization’s inaugural seminar until early October, while the next course begins October 1st. The final writing project for the inaugural seminar is an important opportunity for my writing to be considered for potential publication, and it is critical that I write it; this is why I am asking for your support in covering the costs of tuition. The philosophical society providing these seminars is offering me a life-changing opportunity to continue pursuing my continuing higher education in philosophy in earnest, which is something i haven’t been able to do in years. It will enrich me in my private life, my life as a writer, and in my work providing philosophical mentoring to my submissives here on Niteflirt.
